Unbelievably awesome CD. I have Bramhall's "Jellycream", which is good, but this record is outstanding. From the first notes of Green Light Girl to the very end, all these songs are from the heart & soul of an underrated guitar player/singer. He sounds like Hendrix one minute, then SRV the next, and there's also the Clapton influence. Bramhhall was recruited by Clapton to play on several of his records, and Clapton & B.B.King covered 2 of his songs on their CD "Riding with the King". Bramhall plays the guitar left-handed & upside down (a la Albert King) which makes his playing even more interesting. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED CD if you're in to the blues/rock/soul kind of thing. If any contemporary guitar player were to carry on the Hendrix tradition, Doyle Bramhall II would be my pick. Despite some earlier drug issues, (which I believe led to the breakup of the Arc Angels) he has put out 2 incredible CDs as a solo artist. I'm waiting for the next solo project, as this CD was released in 2001!Read full review
If you like "electric ladyland", this is the 21st century version of that record. Doyle Bramhall 2 is the most talented guitarist on the planet right now. Tunes like "Smokestack", "Green Light Girl" and "Thin Dream" showcase his many influences along with his own unique brand of psychedelic blues rock. about 85 percent of the record was cut live in the studio. No gimmicks- no pro tools, no lies. Raw Rocking guitar. Thats my two cents
Melody & grace oozes from this great c/d , a must have for your collection . The 3 slow mellow songs will make the hair on your back stand on end . I think that his real power is the heart felt passion that he pumps into these 3 songs without sounding sombre at all. He also totally rocks on all the other songs . You WILL find something you like on this c/d , if you don't , i'll come around and thump you . Woza.
Doyle is the wizard of the Robert Johnson guitar parts on Eric Clapton's Sessions for Robert J. DVD and a contributing-key to the distinct Arc Angels' only CD. If you are looking for something in the vein of the aforementioned, this won't be the CD that fills your appetite. Delivering a harder edge than these other works, his talents can still be admired. Sadly, this effort seems to lack any radio friendly tracks and despite all of his successes on other projects, this one gets only a 3 out of 5, mostly for technique, production and engineering. WELCOME leaves me looking forward to the next release for all the wrong reasons.
This to me , is one of the all time great records. All of it was recorded live in studio - including vocals and guitar solos - ..the only overdubs on the whole thing are acoustic guitars on "thin dream"... has the feel of the legends it follows in the footsteps of...led zeppelin, beatles, hendrix... now ...Doyle II. Incredible singing, memorable songs, and good lord the guitar playing... those of you who know REAL guitar playing is all about feel and tone and emotion will be in for a real treat. This album is a classic.
