This is a 1952 version of the HG Wells 1938 Radio broadcast (included), but set in LA California. It's a gem of a classic, I love. The story and special effects will keep you laughing, but you must pretend to be frightened once and a while, lol. It's definitely better and completely unlike the "New" version, with Tom Cruise petting Robbie's ass, LMAO. The video shows Full Screen on my 32" LCD, and the quality of image is superb. A must have for your science Fiction library, as modern Sci-Fi movies are total CGI queer tainted garbage.

This 2003 edition of the War Of The Worlds has been promoted as the definitive edition of the film. I found that this DVD transfer is inferior to the 1999 Edition in every way. This new 2003 edition was taken from different preprint material than the 1999 edition. I have projected both versions on a 1080i DLP projector and the 2003 edition falls short of the 1999 edition, in color saturation as well as sharpness. It appears that the print or preprint has a registration problem. What this means is that the print that this 2003 edition was made from was slightly out of registration. In short, other than seeing some minor highlights in the shadow areas of the picture that may be more revealing than the 1999 edition, this DVD transfer is not superior to the 1999 DVD. I will give Paramount credit, however, for sticking to the original 4:3 full frame format and not converting the film to a widescreen format and cropping the top and the bottom the frame in order to satiate the people who want everything widescreen.Read full review
Great, since it has some extra features that I enjoyed, the cast commentaries and especially the Orson Wells 1938 Radio broadcast that scared the "He**" out of the listeners back then. I was 11 years old when I saw it in 1953 at the theater. Us kids used to go to all of the Sci-fi movie matinees. Most all of the Sci-fi movies were in black and white, while this one was special, because it was in color. I think that this is one of the best Sci-Fi movies ever. although, the scariest Sci-Fi movie for me, was "The Thing from another world" 1951. You would never believe that James Arness, from "Gun Smoke" fame could be so scary as the thing! I give War of the Worlds 5 Stars and recommend it to everyone!!!

A perennial favorite, WGN use to run the George Pal version every Halloween. The story-line of invading extraterrestrials is as engaging in the 1952 movie as it was in Wells' 1897 book, though with some variations. The SFX in this 1952 Sci-Fi movie, still hold up. I particularly like the floating Manta-ray look of the Martian war machines. Good Halloween double-feature with "Earth vs.The Flying-Saucers, or Howard Hawks' "The Thing From Another World." All go great with Halloween candy and buttered-popcorn.

One of the best of the early Science Fiction films. Very well done and great presentations of aliens and their spacecraft.
