Bruno Walter (1876-1962) recorded these Wagner Overtures, Preludes, and Siegfried Idyll near the end of his life in stereo with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra (Los Angeles). The sound is beautiful, performances very heart felt and committed. One of Walter’s best recordings in my humble opinion, and very much worth hearing and having. Bruno Walter’s Wagner is worthy to stand as a collection with similar compilations by Klemperer/Philharmonia (EMI) Szell/Cleveland (Sony) Ormandy/Philadelphia (Sony; later RCA) Bernstein/New York Philharmonic (Sony) Karajan/Berlin Philharmonic (EMI) though only Walter has “Siegfried Idyll”.
