Why did I buy it? As far as video history accounts of WW2, the 1956 NBC production "Victory at Sea" has a total of 11.9 hours of material. This set has 30 hours of viewing. Plus I got it on Ebay at half the price of a DVD mail order catalouge. What do I like about it? Most video accounts give a overall view of both Europe & the Pacific covering the rise of Hitler in the mid 1930's then to Dec. 7th 1941 and on to 1945. The writers of this DVD have broken down the timeline to days & months of the entire conflict. Much more coverage on the home front and how the American public was taking it as the war was unfolding. In 30 hours of viewing you are going to see lots of footage you most likely have never seen before What did I dislike about it? Between chapters the producers left about 5 seconds of blank screen followed by 2 second film clip transitions as if it was rough cut for TV broadcast. This happens around 7 or 8 times per DVD. That leaves the either screen blank or ocupied with useless transitions for something around a total of 8 mins over 10 Discs. .Read full review
I am disappointed with this DVD set, I was hoping to get a documentary that accurately covers WWII. Instead, when I watch this I picture myself sitting in a 1940's movie theater watching the propaganda reels that we're being fed to the American public. It does not say anywhere in the description that this is such an American slanted documentary. Although it does cover many aspects of the war and many battles that do not involve the United States, the narrator with his nasal 1940's voice, manages to successfully ridicule every country that is not the United States. I do not recommend buying this; although the footage is very good, the commentary is at most times difficult to listen to. I plan on trying again with the Time Life WWII set.
Compared to other WWII releases, this set was without weighted propanganda from the 1930's mind set and gives a helpful view of the war as it developed. The past is never behind us. We are living in history. I also like the way the dvd's play all the way through easily without strange remote commands. It's well done and friendly engineered and produced. I doubt that public school history versions are as objectively presented.
Much of the poor quality video looks like it has been taken or copied from online sources.
