Susan Hayward is a nurse who goes to Africa to assist a female doctor. Robert Mitchum is the hardboiled safari guide who takes her into the jungle. Mitchum starts out by making sexist remarks about how women should stay home, but of course his initial dislike turns to romantic attraction. The weird thing about his hostility is that he likes and admires Doctor Mary, so if he's fine with a female doctor, why does he object to a female nurse? The film is almost ruined by the opening scene of jungle animals in crates and cages, ready for transport to a zoo. The gorilla escapes, and Mitchum must recapture the beast. But the gorilla is obviously a man in a costume --- a pretty bad costume with a plastic-looking face. The scene is intended to showcase Mitchum's bravery, but by modern standards it's hard not to laugh...unless you're crying over the fate of the captive animals. Either way, this scene hasn't aged well, and won't endear Mitchum to modern viewers. If you stick with the film, there are some good moments with Hayward, Doctor Mary, and the natives. The plot could have done without macho Mitchum and the unconvincing romance. Read full review
