... basically because it is a foreign film in Spanish with English subtitles. You had to pay attention to the subtitles or lose your place in the movie. However it was not hard paying attention to this movie! The director Pedro Almovodar played this movie out in a storyline that had mystery, murder, black comedy, drama, and even a sort of magic realism. The murders in the movie were dealt with differently than most movies. There were no police chases, it was done matter of factly, and touched so many people in the movie. No overblown shooting or blow-'em-up action. Penelope Cruz won a Cannes Award for her role in this. She actually could act in this movie, and in the bonus features she said she was glad she came back to her roots for this film. Carmen Maura, (who is considered Spain's Sophia Loren), played an older woman, (Penelope's thought dead Mother), and was very good in the role! This is a thoughtful yet black comedy film about the female characters in this intricate study of three generations of women who didn't always get along. The director returned to his hometown to shoot this film and it shows that his heart was in this production. 'Volver' which in Spanish means "to return" does have a strangeness to it, and may not be for everyone's taste. We enjoyed it, and recommend it for those that like foreign films and the genre this film is in.Read full review
Pedro Almovodar is a magician. In his latest film he takes the "Magic Realism" that Latino authors and playwrights are famous for using and twists it in an original and clever way that makes this movie a delightful mystical trick. I had grown tired of his films, but he's returned and I think this may be his best film to date. One of the most fascinating things about this drama/comedy is how crimes are dealt with. Not a cop in sight. Murder. No problemo. It's why the movie works so well. Life punishes unfairly, makes you tougher and Karma plays a primary role in getting revenge. It's all done with such humor and warmth, that it works. Cannes gave Almovodar a Best Screenplay Award for this very clever story that puts Penelope Cruz (also Cannes Award) in it's starring role and makes you see what Cruise saw in her. She's strong, sexy and beautiful and all the supporting cast have soul and charm. "Volver", to return, is to me a comeback for Almovodar, a return to his birthplace of La Mancha. He is Miguel Cervantes, fighting injustice and seeking truth throughout the story. Is it a coincidence when he shows us those scenes of the huge windmills that now ironically power the land? He blames the ill winds for bringing problems but he makes sure that they also bring the healing power of change.Read full review

I actually purchased the movie,Volver,as a replacement. Very hard item to find in stores,at least my experience in the Bay Area. Directed by Pedro Almodovar, this film is set in present day Spain and is in Spanish (at least French and English subtitles). Stars: Penelope Cruz, Carmen Maura. The opening scene is enchanting, with its visually stunning backdrop, set in a Spanish village. The rest of the movie follows this pattern bold colors, but is complemented by equally bold themes surrounding family, tradition, tragedy, redemption, and social taboos. This movie is not all dramatic, there is room for humor despite very real and tragic family story. Some parental discretion might be advised for children.
This movie is worth watching even if you have to rely on the English subtitles. The plot is clever, lots of surprises to keep it interesting, and a satisfying ending. This director loves to present strong women in control of their lives, and this movie is no exception. Even if it wasn't a great movie, it would be worth watching just to spend an hour or so looking at Penelope Cruz in low-cut tops and tight skirts. She's amazing.
