This is the Velvet Underground at its best. Their music in general ages well and sounds as good today as it must have back in the 60's. This CD was recorded live in Texas and San Francisco in late 1969 when the band was at their peak. It features four previously unreleased songs and radically different versions of "Sweet Jane" and "New Age", among others. If you are familiar with the epocal first album Velvet Underground & Nico, I hope you will appreciate songs like "Femme Fatale" being sung here by Lou Reed and not Nico. I personally never liked Nico's creepy vocal tone. There's something so cool about the casual, dead-pan tone Lou Reeds delivers. I can't say enough about this album. I encourage every music fan to listen. Rock N' Roll doesn't lie, it never promises a happy ending like the movies and the Velvets wrote some sad music. However, I can honestly say when I listen to this and other work by "VU" I feel like Lou Reed just gets "it." He wrote honest, kick ass songs that you truly identify with or at least, appreciate the honesty. I would also recommend Live 1969 Vol. 2 and their self-titled 3rd album & Loaded album.Read full review

Many of the Velvet Underground's albums begin to sound the same, and the marginal benefit of adding another diminishes rather quickly. This album ties them up in a neat bundle, giving both their classic songs and some more rare pieces that live, raw touch. I actually prefer the original double album (or cassette), but you would have to buy volumes one and two to get everything there (and more).
