The Velocity Micro Cruz R101 is a very basic tablet. PROS ARE: -Since it is basic, anyone can easily use it to watch movies, listen to music, surf the web, read books and check emails. -It already has quite a few apps downloaded onto it. -The gadget’s memory is expandable to 8 GIGS. -This is a 7-inch tablet with built-in WIFI. -Strong battery life. -The price is a bargain compared to other tablets. CONS ARE: -You might want more features such as a camera, this does not have one. -This device is relatively slow. Overall, if you want a cheap tablet to do basic things on such as check email, surf the web and watch videos, then this tablet may be the best for you.
This is a BASIC device. It's an ereader with some tablet functions. Out of the box there's NO access to android market so you are limited to about a dozen apps. Install a custom ROM and you are doing much better. You have access to Android Market and might boost your CPU speed to 800 Mhz with the right version of the device. The 533 Mhz this device runs at is adequate at best. No Angry Birds and watching video is ok as long as it falls withing parameters the device can handle. You also might ruin it by attempting the install. It might be worth it since you can then install apps to the internal SD card giving you the option of hundreds of apps. The resistive screen is NOT a joy to use. The use of stylus is strongly suggested, or your fingernail. Some people will have more or less difficulty with the screen than others so this is highly subjective. Basically, think of the screen as several layers of plastic. You have to push hard enough on the top layer so it touches the bottom layer so the device can read your input. The tip of a retracted ballpoint pen works well but the tip of our finger doesn't, but the nail does. It takes practice but will eventually probably become bearable. Screen resolution and brightness are pretty good. Not HD but great for reading books, comics, and web pages. Battery life is not too bad; I've gotten 8 hours reading with the screen about 50% or so and wi-fi on or off. These are not hard numbers as I didn't keep tract and turned the unit on and off, had wi-fi running some of the time etc. The WORST part is that there seems to be no deep sleep mode. If you just turn the screen off, but keep the unit on, and leave it overnight you will end up with a dead or very low battery. You must turn the unit off then boot it back up (1-2 minutes) each time. That is annoying. The R301 model does not have this problem (but it's a NO BUY device in my book anyway). WiFi works. Reception isn't the best at the edge of coverage zones. It works better holding a signal at a distance from the router once established than it does trying to obtain a connection when you only have 1 bar. Apps are plentiful once a custom ROM is installed. You won't get the latest and greatest but there are still plenty of apps that run on android 2.1. If you want an a basic tablet this is not a bad choice but there are probably better. I paid 50 and was happy as it's a gift for an 11 year old. It covers all the bases. If your use is more than casual though spend more and get more. I would have added another star if the battery management was better. You should NOT have to power down the device if you are only leaving it for a few hours. Bad design there.Read full review
This was purchased to read on the go a la Kindle with an occasional video. As it goes, Kindle works quite well. Low Ram and weak processing makes it take a bit longer than preferred to load and page turning's a bit jerky especially with the resistive screen working better with a stylus. But it works for its intended purpose. Bit heavy, though. As for the rest, some websites don't run properly but that's probably due to it being relatively cheap. Battery lasts all day though standby doesn't seem to make it drain any slower. Oh, and while it's not too difficult to pick things, doing any sort of maintenance or changing settings can be a bit tedious. Thankfully Wi-Fi settings are on-screen to make this easier. Although the one bought was used, so maybe some things were installed by a previous user. In the end? Works great for reading, which is great for its purpose here. Anything beyond, say, YouTube might necessitate something more expensive.Read full review

I bought this item, because my daughter has one. I saw how she enjoyed hers. I used it a couple times and enjoyed it myself, so I purshased this one for myself. My reason for for liking this item, is for it's size, features( able to download apps, music, videos, pictures). I don't think I would dislike this item. The way this item compares to others is the size and price. Others may have more storage and features, but I purchased this because it fit into my budget.
