Varsity Blues is a 1999 American coming-of-age sports drama film directed by Brian Robbins that follows a small-town high school football team and their overbearing coach through a tumultuous season. The players must deal with the pressures of adolescence and their football obsessed community while having their hard coach on their back constantly. In the small (fictional) town of West Canaan, Texas, football is a way of life, and losing is not an option. Jonathan "Mox" Moxon (James Van Der Beek) is an intelligent and academically gifted backup quarterback for the West Canaan High School football team. Despite his relative popularity at school, easy friendships with other players, and smart and sassy girlfriend Jules Harbor (Amy Smart), Mox is dissatisfied with his life. He wants to leave Texas to go to school at Brown University. When the star quarterback Lance,is injured, Mox steps up to fill the position and proves to be a superstar to the surprise of everyone. The coach is a real prick who has lead the team for years by fear, cruelty, and intimidation, until now. Mox just isn't the person to stand for this. Together, Mox and his teammates prevail, and in the process force Kilmer out. This was a good movie.Read full review
Varsity blues is a well made entertaining sports film. It stars James Vanderbek,Paul Walker,Jon Voight, and Ali Larter. All of the performances are excellent especially Jon Voight as the coach who only cares about winning and nothing welfare of his players. Paul Walker is the superstar quarterback who gets injured because the coach wouldn't take out Billy Bob the best offensive lineman team when he suffered a concussion. Billy bob got dizzy and then down and Paul Walker's character was done for year. James Vanderbeek then steps in and the team doesn't miss a beat. However, things don't change the coach still treats him like garbage. Ali Larter from Heroes plays the head cheerleader who was dating the star quarterback before he injured. Now,she wants the new star quarterback, then the best scene in the movie happens. Ali Larter shows him her whipped cream bikini. In the end,James vanderbeek unites the team in getting rid of the coach and winning the big game. I highly recommend this film.Read full review
