Ive yet to read the book though Im looking forward to it after taking in this wonder of a motion picture. Do I recommend it? Not per se because its not your traditional narative, especially if you want to place it in the "Sci-Fi" box, but I do, shall we say, advise you to watch it. Its at once beautiful and disquieting, moving and yet unsettling, triumphant yet heartbreaking as well as achingly disturbing at times. Scarlette Johanson is simply remarkable. She exudes emotional distance and genuine curiosity and as things progress even tenderness but always complete believability. Not to mention she has some of the braver nude scenes Ive seen from a mainstream actress in I dont know how long. Now before you either eschew the film or injure youself in an attempt to run and purchase the film solely on a "sans modesty" basis, know this. Though graphic and tastefully non exclusive is the nudity its not directly related to sexuality, at least not visually, and therefore feels in no way gratuitous. It is, in fact, while not emotionally detached, almost clinical in a sense. Like its presented in an observational setting, but I digress. In short (too late), the film examines the mythologies of identity in full view of the realization of the true self vs projected identity debate with no sign of fear of rebuke by stating, in my opinion, that the identity we wear daily, like our clothing is cleaned and prepared for daily and under the skin we are truly something mostly undiscovered and unseen. Even void and without form, awaiting the arrival of a god of our choice, an identity we've projected into existence, to move over the face of our own individual(?) deep and command in that assured voice "LET THERE BE......you......"....or perhaps discover tragically that the person you are when out of sight, unclothed and vulnerable is poles apart from the identity you strive daily to convince yourself and others that you are. So.....heavy on philosophical themes. Beautifully shot, borrowing a bit of visual prowess from Kubrick and remarkably acted. Not everyone will like it but I for one am grateful that films like "Under The Skin" are still being made.Read full review

I watched this film on Netflix. I like psychological thrillers/sci-fi. It puzzled me of course, but looked up the book specs., which, explained a lot about the movie. --Spoiler Alert-- She is part of a small creature team on Earth from a distant planet looking for resources (food). They assimilate but look on humans as animals. Yet, she (Scarlett Johansson) begins to feel empathy (perhaps due to a caste system in her own planet) that eventually leads to her downfall. I've not bought this movie (tough watch) but I think of it often and perhaps will purchase it in the future for the theme, great direction and superb acting.
