When I first heard about the Marvel Ultimate line of books, I was initially annoyed. The Ultimate Universe, as they described, is a reimainging of some of Marvel's best known characters in a darker, more edgier perspective. I had always been a beliver of "don't fix what works" and I avoided the other three titles in the Ultimate Universe with a passion (Ultimate Spider-man, Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Marvel Team-Up). Finally, but friend loaned me his copy of the Ultimates Vol 1 and I read it as a favor. Wow. Was I ever entertained! The Ultimates Vol 1 revolves around a group of "heroes" working as agents of Shield. Under the guidance of Nick Fury, this team seeks our and deals with threats to the stability of America. The team, lead by Captain America, all have their character flaw, which are wonderfully developed as the series goes on. Thor is protrayed as a crazy eco-champion who believes he is a god. Iron Man is an alcholic who seems to be more worried about dating the best women in the world as oppose to helping humanity. The Hulk is protrayed as a violent, shallow beast who is also sexually frustrated. All in all, it is a refreshing change from the comics of our youth. The writing is sharp and crisp. Touched of humor creep in and you may find yourself laughing out loud once in a while. Some people report seeing this as a social commetary of sorts, but it is hard to say. All I know is that I found the writing to be as entertaining as some of the better fiction books I have read. The art is not bad. Of course, I am more of an Alex Ross fan, so my standards are fairly high. However, I do have to say that the art suits the mood and feel of the comic quite well. As for downsides, some people may find it hard to accept some of the "reimagined" concepts (such as Nick Fury being black, bald and very black-ops in his actions). I did feel like that at first, but soon found the change refreshing. So, if you're looking for a good, entertaining read, give this title a try. I do have to caution that some of the themes in this comic are mature and is not intended for young readers.Read full review
