Had it not been for 2004's Confessions, Usher's previous release, 8701 would have been a contender for album of the decade. From the soft opening strokes of piano until Usher chants about the evolution of dance and patenting a signature move himself at the end, this album is a exceptional for many reasons, balance and excellent writing being at the forefront. There are slow, heart pulling love songs like U Got It Bad, Can U Help Me, and How Do I Say; and songs that invoke a visceral necessity to erupt in rhythmic moment such as the catchy I Don't Know ft. P.Diddy, U R The One, and the radio smash U Don't Have To Call. Good writing is essential for a good song. For 8701 Usher pulled in Sean Combs, Jermaine Dupri, The Neptunes, Babyface, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and Brian M. Cox a musical dream team of producers and writers. Just as impressive is that Usher is on the writing credits of almost every single song. Writing solo on the "Without U" interlude, it perhaps is him at his most vulnerable, crooning smoothly for his lost love. Something reminiscent of a live improvisation plea, the interlude leads beautifully into Can U Help Me, the album's most emotional song and though the tenth track, it marks the halfway point and establishes the tone for the rest of the album. Expertly crafted, 8701 sees Usher move into a new category as writer, a new level as a vocalist, and solidifies that there is no one sexier in R&B. The velvety vocals are spread throughout the album which shows Usher displaying greater range and emoting subject matter that most 22 year old's find difficult to describe. 8701 ranks high among not just R&B, but single artist albums and is validation why Usher is the best selling artist of the last decade.Read full review

I got this CD a few years back when it first came out, back when songs had meaning instead of just repeating the same words over and over.I heard 'dnt have to call" on the radio recently and I just can't get it out of my head it brought back so many good memories from those good days. I really think listening to the whole CD will make me relive those great moments I'm positive that I will enjoy this CD very much !
