Fidelity Ultimate Chess Challenge is a 2D chess game for the Lynx. The game uses silver pieces for the first player and gold pieces for the second player. Fidelity Ultimate Chess Challenge includes only the most basic of options. Players can choose to play the game from an overhead view or an isometric view from behind their own pieces.
There are 17 levels of difficulty to select from, eight based on search depth, eight based on time of search, and finally an ultimate difficulty mode without any search depth or time limitations. Players can also enable or disable sounds and messages, and enter their own names.
The game allows two players to play on the same machine by alternating turns. When two human players are competing against each other, they have the option to rotate the board 180 degrees so each player can see his or her own pieces from the bottom up. This is optional in the overhead view mode, while setting a two-player game to isometric view automatically includes the board rotation. During a match, players can examine the past moves in standard chess notation, and can choose to take back up to 100 moves.
