I bought this DVD after streaming Val Kilmer's recent autobio film, as I had forgotten he was in Top Gun. I remember hating all the macho-macho when the movie first came out, but that aspect didn't seem to bother me this time around. Maybe that's what happens after you know how badly Life came to bite somebody years later. I loved "Top Gun" this time around--so glad I was able to find the DVD!

Buy it for yourself, for a friend (be sure they don't have), or buy to donate a copy to your local public library. The storyline is fabulous and the music is breathtaking. Most people will get chills at different times throughout this amazing film but my all time favorite is seeing Tom Cruise riding along the runway on motorcycle. And who can forget the sex scene that isn't really by today's standards but boy oh boy can a person imagine and Hollywood did a genius job of letting people imagine--much more effective than what we see in films now. While the storyline involves the Top Gun school and a plot about the never-ending respect and being there for each other in this most dangerous job and the difficulties faced when one of their own dies, we cannot forget the romance here either. We do enjoy the romance in this spectacular film and while the film would not be the same without it--it is a secondary plot.Read full review
Tom Cruise plays a made-for-Cruise part in this film of a top navy aviator, his ambition, his ego, his brash manner and his ultimate meeting with his destiny. It is not a subtle plot, but it succeeds by virtue of its direct, honest one-way approach to each and every issue. There are good guys and better guys, no bad guys. They compete for attention and success. There is overweaning brashness and hubris that is punished; there is level-headed pertinacity that is rewarded; there is tragedy without blame; there is a one-dimensional love affair that is recalled in the closing scene by an unsubtle song. It is not a subtle movie. But it is engaging and compelling. The camera work is superb; lessons are learned and decency is rewarded. It is a very American film directed in a very American way. It is definitely worth watching.Read full review
Love the flying sequences. Disc 2 is the gold mine. Great interviews and background. Of course,, still waiting for Top Gun2 and wondering if it lives up to it's predecessor.
