This GPS device is really easy to use, I love the large screen and graphics used. I would recommend it, but point out that you should know the address of the location you are going to because you can not always find the place of interest by the device--even though there is quite an extensive list of Places of Interest. (I could not locate my church without exact address.) I wish you could find an intersection without having to give a City name first. There are a lot of unincorporated areas, townships and unclear city boundaries where we need to find an intersection without knowing exactly what city it's located in. This is important for Emergency Contact persons. (I know this feature is available since the Garmin allows you to do this.) But overall, this device works for me, and I'm happy with it.Read full review
I had an old TomTom ONE 3rd Edition that finally passed on to its greater reward after many years of great use. I did my research and updated myself to the TomTom XXL 540TM, and haven't regretted that decision. I was definitely after the Lifetime Maps option, a big plus. I also wanted the 5-inch screen on the new device, a must for these "not so young" eyes of mine. *grin* A big surprise was the voice reading the street names, which I really appreciated! Updating with the TomTom Home software on my laptop is a breeze, as always. I'm a big fan of TomTom products, and will continue to use them. I have friends who use other products; I prefer TomTom products -- to each his own. *grin* My only gripe is that the windshield mount is too short. With the sloped windshields in cars these days, you have to stretch to Timbuktu to reach the TomTom to make any changes or load an address. I went hunting for some sort of mount for my TomTom, and came up with an Arkon EasyPort Windshield Mount for less than $15. Works like a charm, and I don't have to reach nearly as far anymore to do any changes. Recommend it for anyone with the same problem. My final and total choice will always be TomTom. They have an excellent product, and I will continue to recommend it to everyone!Read full review
Works great, always gets me where I'm going. Will take a stupid loop every once in a great while. The traffic bar can be a big help, although the available info is not always up to the minute, not units fault. I own three of them, because after the first one I wanted one for every car. I have had problem with the "free maps for life" card with all of them. Very easy to use, love the big screen.
I was planning a trip to Europe and was happy to find this navigator on eBay which according to the description contained maps of both America and Europe. When I arrived to Italy and started the unit it told me that there were no maps for Europe in the unit!! Luckily I had also brought my PC so I downloaded the TomTom program and thought I could download the missing maps. This would cost some 50$.I decided to swallow my dissapointment and tried to download the new maps only to find that the memory of the unit was already full. When I tried to save the old maps in my PC it took hours so I gave up. The TomTom is clearly an inferior product with too small a memory and complicated handling of the software. I will now go back to my old Garmin which has none of these problems!
I bought the "World Traveler Edition", with both domestic and international map sets, as I travel to Europe with some frequency. This GPS is outstanding for travel in all the European countries I visit - Germany, France, UK, Sweden. So far, it has never mis-directed me, even on local and one-way streets - the usual nemesis of Americans in Europe. The lane feature helps a lot. It even adapts to traffic quirks like France's "bear (left or right) exits, and the odd rotaries in the U.K. While I have no complaints at all with the hardware, TomTom's support is another matter entirely. I paid more for this unit to get "lifetime" map and traffic updates. The TomTom Home software will simply not allow free map update - and when attempting to engage the "free" update, goes into "error mode". Calling TomTom is a waste of time, as they have layers of automation to prevent access to a human, and if/when you get to a real person, the stock answer is "That's not my department, why don't you call in again and try some other menu option". If you can live with the unit out of the box, this is the unit for you. If you ever need manufacturer help, stay away from TomTom. I own five of them, and the software will only work on those for which TomTom can charge for updates. Too bad good hardware has such lousy support.Read full review
