Although I liked the movie, I was disappointed that it didn't spend more time developing the character of Oliver Cromwell. This is what I thought I was getting, something concentrating more and him and his role in the execution of the king. I also thought the movie would give more insight into the mind of the King, which it didn't. It barely had any scenes with him in it at all. It actually ended up being more about the conflict between Cromwell and his mentor than anything else. Still, it was a good movie.

This is a good movie, but mostly because of its historical theme, a stunning set and an excellent, dignified performance by Rupert Everett. Although the script takes liberties in rearranging a few well-documented facts about this era, I found the overall story enlightening and interesting, even if it was a enormously sad in a few different ways. The best part of the movie, however, Everett's performance...especially since I'd already seen him on "Who do you think you are?" and knew ahead of time that he is actually a descendant of the character he plays. Overall, if you like historical movies of any kind, you should find this one enjoyable.
This is an excellent film. I knew very little about this period in British history. Everything about this film is excellent:the acting, the cinematography and the costumes. Tim Roth is always a guarantee of a superb performance and he does not disappoint as Oliver Cromwell nor does Rupert Everett as King Charles the first, son of King James the VI,who rewrote the Bible to his liking.I am glad I have this film in my collection and highly recommend it to anyone who loves seeing history come to life.
