Based on a horrible novel by Hemingway, but movie is nothing like the novel. First acting job for 19 year old Bacall, whom married 44 year old Bogart fell in love with during filming. Bacall plays a tramp and a thief, an amazing role for an innocent girl to have to play. There are a lot of memorable lines to enjoy here. Watching it is a lot of fun.

This film, based on the book by Ernest Hemingway, directed by Howard Hawks, written by William Faulkner and Jules Furthman and Starring Bogey and Bacall is the textbook definition of Classic Film. Even small parts like that of Hoagey Carmichael providing musical interludes and Walter Brennan's comic relief are perfectly staged and performed. Add all this to the intrigue of WW II in Martinique and the real-life story of middle aged Humphrey Bogart falling for his femme fatale 19 year old co-star, Lauren Bacall and well, it all ads up to cinematic alchemy. The DVD, released in 2003, also provides a featurette on the making of the film and the love affair between Bogey & Bacall as well as period cartoons and a unique radio version of the film. All in all, this package is an enduring document for both film historians and casual viewers of every age and temperament.Read full review

Excellent movie, especially to watch the Bogard/Bacall (she's only 19) chemistry happening as the film evolves. The extra features showing the fact that Howard Hawks told Hemingway that Hawks could make a successful movie out of Hemingway's worst book..."To Have & Have Not". Hawks brought in Wm. Faulkner to spice up the text. Luckily, we don't get the other 2 stories that are the book version, but instead get the Hollywood "sexy" ending that is very satisfying. Great Warners cartoon based on the movie's scenes.
The fact that this DVD was made in 2003 of a 1946 movie is indication. A mere 3 weeks into filming, Bogie and Bacall fell in love. Seeing Walter Brennan is also a treat. Great music.
