What chills, what thrills! While the Three Stooges' best days were behind them, these 22 slaphappy shorts produced between 1952 and 1954 demonstrate that the enduring comedy team still had a lot of hair-pulling, eye-gouging, and head-banging life in them yet. You can be forgiven a certain amount of déjà vu when watching some of the shorts. Studio budget cuts necessitated the use of recycled footage. "Booty and the Beast," for one, contains Curly's now-poignant cameo in "Hold That Lion." Still other shorts recycled plots from the team's Curly days ("A Missed Fortune" is a remake of "Healthy, Wealthy and Dumb"). While none of these shorts rank in the Stooges pantheon or are likely to change anyone's anti-Shemp bias (can't we all just get along?), they are knockabout fun for die-hard fans.

Columbia pictures over-cut their budget
This collection of Stooge silliness is from their later years...1952-54, to be exact. These shorts featured Shemp Howard as the "third Stooge", as they had since 1947, when Shemp's kid brother Curly had to retire due to a massive stroke. Shemp was, in his own way, as funny as Curly; only his "shtick" was a little different. Shemp was with Moe and Larry at the first of their careers when they made silent pictures with Ted Healy. As the "talkies" came in vogue, Shemp had disagreements with Healy and dropped out of the act, allowing brother Curly to join the gang. The rest, as they say, is history. These shorts from the Stooges' sunset years (Columbia disbanded their short subject division in 1958, due to poor profits) contain some very funny episodes, but others were substandard due to Columbia's budget cutbacks, which caused the studio to recycle a lot of footage from older shorts. There are, however, a few completely original episodes in this collection, including the 3-D films "Spooks" and "Pardon My Backfire" (both are hilarious). Other originals include "He Cooked His Goose", "Gents in a Jam", "Three Dark Horses", "Tricky Dicks", "Goof on the Roof", "Income Tax Sappy", and "Shot in the Frontier". The new DVD's include a couple pairs of 3-D glasses for watching the two shorts with this feature. This collection contains a truckload of belly laughs...it would have been even better if Columbia could have kept up a decent budget. I only rate this with 3 stars because of the remakes. If u like the 3 stooges u cant miss this one. Shemp is no curly but he is still funny. Good times.
