I was lintroducef to the author Irwin Shaw by way of a short story collection of various writers. His piece captured the personalities and verbal interplay of a group of soldiers in WW II. His presentatiom of the group's closeness, understanding, and co-respect - sometimes in their quirky humor which represented shared expriences and group code, is compelling. I was aware of The Young Lions but had no real idea about it. It is one of the most engaging books I have ever read. Shaw gets inside a range of characters, in a neutrally judgmental manner, "omnipotent" narrator fashion to let powerfully developed - and in several instances horrifyingly socoipathic - characters come to life. His creation of a different range of humane and sympathetic characters is equally skilled, as the novel follows these people and lets the comparisons evolve. Fine fine book. I believe where Hollywood redeems a central horridly evil character, there is no such nonsense in the original. Read full review
