I will reveal this upfront: Sophie Kinsella is my favorite author. HOWEVER, I have read Gatecrashers by Kinsella's alter ego, Madeline Wickham, and thought it was average; I couldn't even get through Cocktails for Three. The Wedding Girl is fantastic. Milly is set to marry the son of the wealthiest businessman in town, Simon. Milly has a fairly dysfunctional family in that her father, James, is miserable, and her mother, Olivia, is oblivious in James' misery and completely wrapped up in this giant upcoming wedding. She is taken in by Simon's father's wealth and power. Milly and Simon are happy and in love, well, sort of. Milly tries to be someone she is not in order to make Simon happy. Simon has an agenda as well in that he wants to one-up his father. His father did not come into his life until he was in his teens and he harbors a deep resentment. Milly has a career oriented older sister, Isobel, who you fall in love with immediately. Milly also has a curious godmother, Esme. We never exactly do find out her motives. She is a mystery. Milly is all set to marry Simon; however, there is one small problem. She is already married. Her family (and Simon, of course) has no idea. Now that someone from her past has made his way into her present, she must pull her head out of the sand and locate her husband so she can get divorced. But is she already divorced? Will there be a wedding? This is so well written. I highly recommend it.Read full review
I have always been a fan of Sophie Kinsella's writing, and I have been getting into her books that she writes as Madeleine Wickham. Although I will admit, I think that the "Kinsella" books are a bit more funny, whereas I feel that her "Wickham" books are a bit more drama. BUT, I did enjoy "The Wedding Girl". When Milly's past comes back to haunt her, you find yourself laughing and gasping about the turn of events. You may find yourself irritated with Olivia, and charmed by Simon- but the bumps and roads may make you gasp! Great read! Two Thumbs up! I highly recommend it to the fans of the author, as well as fans of the chick lit genre!
