The Val Lewton Horror Collection is American film & film noir at its best--great cinematography, well-written stories that build suspense & horror with few special affects, no graphic violence, poignant with mystery & social & philosophical depth. Some of the best movies ever made in black and whitle--the use of shadows & light, along with quality music, and the special feature commentaries make this collection a must-see, must-have. An informative documentary on Val Lewton courtesy of Martin Scorcese, tops off the show. The seller I bought from provided a clean & well-cared for used copy, and sent it well-packaged and promptly.

Wow. I could easily just leave it at that. 9 films here from legendary producer, Val Lewton, all featuring a strong psychological bent to them. Are the creatures real? Is it all in their mind? These aren't your typical vintage B-horror films. These are films that make you think and I hope, like me, you'll love them all the more for it. The Cat People....great film, probably his most famous, was remade in the 80's or 90's Curse Of The Cat People....great film, sequel but not what you think, this film has been used in psychology classes I Walked With A Zombie....good film but not up to the other's standards The Body Snatcher....fantastic film starring Boris Karloff and featuring Bela Lugosi, Karloff puts in a superb performance Isle Of The Dead....another fantastic film starring Boris Karloff, probably the best on the set, absolutely wonderful Bedlam....yet again, fantastic film starring Boris Karloff, second best on the set The Leopard Man....good, solid film but not as strong as some of the others Ghost Ship....the only film that could be considered bad, something went wrong somewhere The Seventh Victim....good but not great, a very nihilistic film Not the best descriptions but believe me when I say, this set is highly worth checking out. I treasure mine and so should you.Read full review
This is a great collection of movies. I saw a few of these old classics and was impressed at how they took simple things and made them scary. Val Lewton used curtains fluttering, strange sounds, native drumbeats, all kinds of props to build these amazing stories. At the end, well, your left to wonder was it real or was it all in there minds. Pretty cool stuff, stunning when you consider how old these movies are. It makes you realize you don't need all the fancy computer stuff to tell a great story. If you like old movies, especially horror, this is the set. This was a great Ebay purchase at a terrific price. If you get the opportunity, pop some popcorn, turn down the lights, and enjoy some great horror classics.
Val Lewton produced some amazing atmospheric movies with chilling undertones that are as entertaining today as they were seventy years ago. For lovers of black and white horror and mysteries, these are highly recommended movies.

This is a superb dvd collection, long overdue. Lewton was a brilliant writer/producer and visionary. His films are not really in the horror genre. They are psychological/suspense thrillers, and are loaded with mystery, symbolism, light and shadow. A great film collection! Sadly, Lewton never realized how great his films were, and thought of himself as a failure. He died when he was only 46. I also highly recommend the Martin Scorsese Documentary that goes with this set. Apparently, Lewton had a great impact on the Scorsese film SHUTTER ISLAND.
