This collection of essays, which is focused on the literacies of nuns in medieval Europe, is designed to bring together specialists working on diverse geographical areas to create a dialogue about the Latin and vernacular texts nuns read, wrote, and exchanged, primarily from the late eighth to the mid-sixteenth centuries. This is the first concentrated study that examines the literacy of nuns in a comparative fashion and at the same time pays close attention to the individual textual and cultural complexities. These essays seek to develop an understanding of how women religious across Europe interacted with books, as writers, readers, patrons, and benefactors/inheritors of books. This project also seeks to draw on the rich body of scholarship that currently exists about nuns in England, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden to find manuscript connections between women from different regions and nationalities, even as it is intended to move beyond these traditional centres of womens literacies to investigate and problematize issues of literacy in other regions and nations. This volume investigates the topic of literacy primarily from the palaeographical evidence of the manuscripts and by discussing records of book ownership in convents and other more external evidence, both literary and historical. In so doing the contributors engage in examining such issues as the representations of nuns and literacy, their participation in the book trade and the inter-monastic circulation and translation of texts.
