Everyone knows "Happy Together" but the Turtles cranked out many more gems. Listen to this album. You will probably even recognize more of them than you think. Songs are not as complex and complicated as some of the songs of other artists of the 60's but I assure you that every one of these 20 "hits" are toe tapping and just plain fun to listen to. The band met and started playing together at Southern California's Westchester High and they really epitomize the "California" sound of the sixties decade...at times outshining some of the Wilson penned Beach Boys songs. Listen to it with a friend and you can be "Happy Together".
The Turtles was an awesome sextet. They've entertained us with amazing melodies which were always elevated by their amazing voices, harmonizing so well together. Their most well-known songs, all on this 20 Greatest Hits collection, are Happy Together, She'd Rather Be With Me, and my personal favorite, Elenore. Their cover of the Barry McGuire hit, Eve Of Destruction also stands out for me. A best Greatest Hits of The Turtles indeed.

I bought this for no particular reason other than to add all my favorite Turtles songs to my music library. This CD has all of them -- and about 10 more than I wasn't looking for. I can only guess that people who are more interested in the group's total output would approve of the others as well. The annotation is excellent and provides a thorough history of the group and these particular songs. In short, I would have been happy with this CD if it contained only the major chart hits -- the songs I was looking for -- but the liner notes helped me appreciate the others.
The Turtles must be one of the most under rated groups of the 1960's. Their sound is magnificent and should rate right up there with the Beach Boys and the Mamas and the Papas as far as vocal arrangements are concerned. I saw the Turtles in concert in 1996 and their sound was just as good as they were in the 1960's. If you love 1960's music, this CD is a must. As with any greatest hits collection, there will only be about five or six great songs out of the twenty or so on the disc, but still worth adding to your collection. The song 'You Baby' is typical of 1960's youthful pop songs of the era and may be one of the best on the disc. If you lived in the era, this CD will leave you smiling.
I'm building the soundtrack for my 50th high school reunion, and this fits in well. I know I can purchase individual songs elsewhere, but I enjoy this format and having them all together. As advertised. Well done!
