This video contains three Stooge shorts featuring Shemp Howard (Samuel Horowitz, older brother of Moe and Curly), who does a fine job as the third Stooge. Shemp was one of the original team when they made films with Ted Healy in the early '30s, and reluctantly returned to the team in 1947 to replace his ailing brother Curly and keep the act going... The silliness begins with "Fright Night"(1947), the first short with Shemp post-Curly. In it, the three are managers for boxer Chopper Kane (Dick Wessel), who is slated to fight "Gorilla Watson", and who isn't too interested in training after meeting Kitty, a lady friend of the Stooges. They are threatened by a gangster named Big Mike (Harold Bauer), who demands they throw the fight, or else. The zany ending in the warehouse is slapstick legend. "Hold That Lion!" (1947) finds the boys as heirs to millionaire junk dealer Ambrose Rose, but are swindled of their inheritance by executor Ichabod Slipp (Kenneth McDonald, who plays a heavy in many later Stooge shorts). They trail the crooked Slipp to a train and sneak aboard, only to run afoul of a lion which they accidentally let loose. Watch for a cameo by Curly (with a full head of hair) as a sleeping passenger on the train, who by this time was so ill from a massive stroke that he could barely stand. Black comedian Dudley Dickerson is also a riot as a porter who is surprised by the lion... In "Who Done It?" (1949), Shemp, Moe and Larry are detectives hired by Mr. Goodrich (Emil Sitka, another fine actor who is featured in many later Stooge films) to protect him from the Phantom Gang. The boys arrive too late, and are met by members of the gang incognito. The lovely Christine McIntyre fools them into believing she is Goodrich's niece (Shemp: "The niece is nice!") and manages to poison Shemp...the acrobatic antics which follow are side-splitting. Emil Sitka gives a great performance at the end as he reappears from being unconcious in a closet. Any true Stooge fan will love this collection of Shemp classics. An hour of belly laughs!Read full review
