Since this is a live stage show, not a remake of the movie The Sound of Music, the mountain scenery is not as spectacular and some of the musical numbers, as well as the placement of certain songs, may be unfamiliar to those who have seen only the Julie Andrews movie. However, judged for what it is, I found this production moving and entertaining. Carrie Underwood and Steven Moyer had real chemistry as Maria and the Captain. The children were perfectly cast, and they even resembled photos of the real-life von Trapp children. All the kids were excellent singers and natural performers, not Hollywood-cutesy. My only problem with the cast was Rolf, supposedly seventeen. The actor was a college senior, and looked even older. Paired with Liesel, played by a college junior who easily passed for sixteen or younger, Rolf came across as very creepy during the SIXTEEN GOING ON SEVENTEEN number.Read full review
This filmed/stage production avoids the Robert Wise movie's unforgiveable omissions of the two Elsa Schraeder songs, "No Way to Stop It," and "How Can Love Survive." Not only are they two of the best musical numbers in the entire production, but they also move the plot along by explaining the fundamental incompatibility of Georg von Trapp and Elsa Schraeder. Laura Benanti is fabulous as Elsa, and of course Audra McDonald hits all the high notes (literally and figuratively) in the central number, "Climb Ev'ry Mountain." We own this DVD and also the British ITV counterpart, and enjoy both.

Really good movie!! I watched this when the performance took place live on the tv. I was very impressed!! Now mind you Carrie Underwood is no Julie Andrews by any means but I think that she did an excellent job portraying Maria in this live on stage performance. Now alot of people when this was performed live on tv didn’t think it was as good the original movie because they felt that Carrie Underwood couldn’t hold a candle to Julie Andrews in this performance. If you are a fan of the original version of The Sound of Music then I highly recommend watching this version and you be the judge of this version of it. I personally love it and I’m glad that I came acrossed this version of it on dvd for a really cheap price. I give this performance of Carrie Underwood 5 stars!!

Back in the summers of 1964 and 1965 I appeared in summer stock productions of "The Sound of Music", cast in the role of Friedrich. Imagine my surprise and excitement to learn that there was going to be a live production of the original Broadway musical - and to be broadcast on my birthday! What a wonderful present!!! While there was much ado both before and after the performance about the choice of casting Carrie Underwood in the role of Maria, the problems with the production go much much deeper than that possible error in judgment. In fact, had several other errors been corrected - or not made in the first place - perhaps her performance might not have drawn such harsh criticism.
