Who doesn't wish they could unleash fire from their fingertips and make mops come to life? The Sorcerer's Apprentice enjoyably captures this fantasy as a young physics student named Dave (Jay Baruchel, She's Out of My League) learns that he's the inheritor of the powers of Merlin--and suddenly finds himself in the middle of a war between two of Merlin's protégés, Balthazar (Nicolas Cage) and Horvath (Alfred Molina, Spider-Man 2). The Sorcerer's Apprentice is a special-effects blockbuster--but it's a pretty good one, not reaching the charmed heights of Pirates of the Caribbean but so much better than Prince of Persia. It runs out of air toward the end, but before that it's jauntily entertaining, with capable dialogue, clever curlicues of plot, and most importantly delightful performances: Cage maintains a light touch, with enough eccentricity to be interesting but not so much that it derails the momentum; Baruchel continues his nerdy hero streak; supporting performances from Toby Kebbell (RocknRolla) and Alice Krige (best known as the Borg Queen from Star Trek) are comic and creepy respectively; Monica Bellucci (Shoot 'Em Up) and Teresa Palmer (Bedtime Stories) are mostly eye-candy but likable nonetheless; and Molina, as ever, is the best thing in the movie, playing silky villainy with effortless aplomb. You know, I think this movie got a bad rap on release. Sure, it was labeled as another "Jerry Bruckheimer Summer movie" but really, it's actually very good. Yeah, I know Nicolas cage can be very hit or miss with his movies (and lets be honest, more are miss than hit nowadays) but this is one Disney action blockbuster that you probably should take the time to view. Cage plays Balthazar, one of three apprentices to the sorcerer Merlin, he spends his time looking for a "chosen one" who can defeat the evil Morgana. This, as you can imagine, takes awhile... a long while. Actually, it takes thousands of years, and when Balthazar does find Dave, who he hopes to be the new Sorcerer, he turns out he is a wimpy dork of a kid (who is played to perfection by Jay Baruchel) So Balthazal trains Dave for his showdown, yada, yada, yada... The casting is impressive, the action is very fast paced, loud and most importantly FUN, the only downside is that the love story between Dave and the girl of his dreams Becky. While needed, it feels like it has been tacked on as more of a plot point than a genuine love story. Did I mention that this film looked spectacular? Well it does, and THAT is why it was so expensive to make, and that is also why it was considered a bust at the box office (even though it did break even at the U.S. box office - just) oh yeah, and it has Alfred Molina in it, and as we all know, Alfred can save any movie ("Prince Of Persia") or just make a good movie, a fantastic movie ("An Education") Go on, take a look at this one, it's really not as bad as you have been lead to believe.Read full review
This movie offers nice clean romance, inspiration of life about life and its ups and downs, inspiration about being able to pay attention to what you do and what you see in yourself and what others see that lots of time is far more positive than you perceive. The movie brings action, humor and the good verses evil plot.

Anyone who has seen Fantasia will be waiting for the Apprentices mop scene. I bought it expecting special effects and was not disapointed. Although the constant stream of jokes gets a bit tiresome,and the storyline is usually predictable, the light show and transformations are seamless and well played. I bought this movie, because like most Disney magic based movies, there is just too much to see the 1st, 2nd and even 3rd time.
