So detailed that it's basically boring with trivia. Nevertheless, one can learn that all religions (no exceptions) have arisen from human speculations, wonder, ignorance and/or fear. The the Great Crusades are analyzed and their real aims and results presented. The great voyages that led to the discovery of continents by Europeans, and the massive loss of populations due to the bubonic plague and smallpox are described. Literally hundreds of the misconceptions of historical events are exposed.

An absolutely fascinating history of the world from a very non-western view. I had heard of the Silk Road in grade school and was just able to visit a portion of it now by going to Uabekistan. I read this book in preparation for the trip but have started it again now that I've actually seen some of the places which profoundly affected the course of history. It is slow reading but fascinating and full of information not usually contained in a history book.

Very detailed. Reads like a story, not a text book.
