Sibley, Elphick, and Dunning go far beyond merely identifying birds in this book. Each avian family is explored giving information on food, foraging habits, breeding and nesting, and conservation status. Also included are details of unique plumages and behaviors of particular species within a family group. The book is generally geared toward intermediate or greater levels of birders who are seeking to delve deeper into the bird world. The information can also be used for identification purposes for species with unique habits (the "dance" of a Reddish Egret when searching for prey in flats, for example). Overall, I recommend this book as a supplement to a good field guide. After looking at pictures and reading perhaps a paragraph or two about a species, if you wish to explore further, consider a copy of this guide. It should be noted that this is not primarily a field guide, but a reference. While there are numerous illustrations to show particular characteristics, the vast majority of the book is text.
