well, after looking at some of the ebay reviews of this movie left by others I can sure understand why this movie is a bit controversial. However, this is actually my family's second copy. We loaned the first one out and never got it back....I think its still circulating thru the church somewhere. Anyway, overall as a "Hollywood" movie, its not the best. Most of the 'actors' are not real actors and just normal people. So I don't think that a lot of the acting is that great - but it is REAL. I can relate to a lot of the so called 'issues' that this Christian man, his family and his church are walking thru. The issues and the situations are REAL - NOT REALITY!!! What the world calls 'reality' tv today is much more poorly acted than the real people in this movie....but it is thought provoking and challenging. And it does hit home and show the good AND the bad of the REAL church community today. I think it will give you something to think about and something to strive for. And of course - who doesn't LOVE Michael W. Smith's music!! Just the icing on the cake. I guess if we loan this copy out and it doesn't come back we'll just keep buying more.Read full review
Very good. I'd rate it 4.5 if half stars were allowed. I bought this mostly for the curiosity value -- I wanted to see how Christian music superstar Michael W. Smith did in his acting debut. Well, I was pleasantly surprised on that front, and even more on the overall quality of the movie. It's a great story, and I thought very well acted. It avoided being overly syrupy or predictable and was not "in your face" preachy. I found the message of the challenge to live out one's faith and be committed to the poor rather than just sending cash to be be very powerful. Definitely worth a watch and I'm eager to share this with a bunch of my friends and discuss it together.
This movie is very well done and true-to-life. I was curious about Michael W. Smith's acting ability, but he does very well (as do the other characters). There are some curse words said within the movie, so you may want to keep that in mind before allowing children to watch this movie (plus the thematic elements are not really for young children under 16 or so). The only complaint I have is the abrupt ending (at least I thought it was abrupt). It is sad to say that this movie shows an accurate reflection of the so-called Mega-churches within America where members are predominately white and rich. The movie depicts a large white church (SO sterile like a hospital...) with a smaller African-American congregation. It focuses on what it really means to call oneself a CHRISTian. The movie contrasts the ones who are really worshipping God - taking in the hurting, the drug addicted, the prostitutes, etc. and those who "think" they are Godly simply because they go to church and give their money; but they do not give of themselves. It is a movie that should be shown in churches across our country and then each member of the congregation should look within their own hearts and ask themselves why they are really coming to church. Is it to share the love of Christ with a hurting world, or is it to feel good about oneself for going to church every Sunday and to show the world just what a "good" person you (think) you are? Think about it. It is a must-see movie.Read full review
if you are a truly devoted Christian and do your best to not watch movies that contradict the will of God....you would probably do your best to avoid this movie...this is todays Christianity i guess you could say at its finest....its a great movie i think in honesty as a movie, but i give the poor review because i bought it particularly off of a Christian movie site, hoping to watch a good Christian film...i hide this film so that none of my Christian friends want to borrow it because i do not want them to see it... the Pastor played by "Jeff Carr" is a very agressive angry, and proud Pastor who never really learns self control, whom lives a life that would shock me if he actually was truly biblically saved with the Spirit of God dwelling in him....i do not believe this movie would make a real Christian, nor do i believe it could possibly help a person be a better Christian, but rather it seems to water down sin.....for a film, i give this 4 out of 5....but for a Christian film its absolute garbage, that will do more harm than good....the movie seems more weakly religious rather than truly loving the Lord, and believing on himRead full review
While on a business trip, I was in a Christian Book store and I picked up and read the insert of this movie and thought that this movie would be a movie that my family and I could watch together. After purchasing it and sitting down with my family we were without a doubt disappointed with this movie. Flaws: 1. This movie exemplifies what many non Christian Americans think being a Christian is really about when it is actually on the contrary. 2. The movie lacked the grace that Christ shows and just shows an angry black man and a white privileged pastor's son that resolved nothing in the end. 3. The amount of cursing that was in this movie was really tasteless. 4. At no time was faith really mentioned during the entire movie. 5. Plot was weak at best. Positives: 1. Touched on some tough areas: a. Gangs b. Greed c. Lust for Power. 2. The washing of the feet was the best part. Conclusion: Would not recommend this movie to anyone (saved or unsaved alike). Truly disappointed with this movie and it is going into the trash can.Read full review
