Several years ago a friend of mine recommended that I read a story about the adventures of a crusty old turn of the century U.S. Marshall out of Fort Smith, Arkansas. The book was "Winding Stair" by Douglas C. Jones. The most fascinating thing about Marshal Oscar Schiller is what he isn’t. He’s not the typical tall, dark, and handsome character that is found in most Western stories. Schiller is a small, homely, cocaine addicted man who wears spectacles and a white Panama hat. But, nevertheless, he’s a brilliant and competent police officer in Judge Parker’s court. I highly recommend all three of Douglas Jones’ books about Marshall Schiller: "Winding Stair", "The Search for Temperance Moon", and "A Spider for Loco Shoat". I enjoyed these stories so much I recently purchased all three on eBay and read them a second time.Read full review
