I first saw this movie in a theater -- during a Chinese film festival. I was so profoundly moved by the movie and its story, I had to be alone and quiet for a few hours afterwards. And eventually, I sought, found, and bought a DVD copy of the movie, and upon watching it again, I had the same reaction. It is a deeply powerful film about romantic longing, loyalty, tradition, and the power of family. It is amazing that you can create a romantic movie with a deep love story that features no sex, no physical contact, and no overt romantic language/dialogue. This is an extremely powerful movie that won't fail to move anyone who watches it. The fact that the dialogue is in Chinese with English subtitles should not put anyone off. "The Road Home" will forever occupy a special place on my list of favorite movies.Read full review

Anyone who knows this film knows the story: a man learns that his father died suddently, so returns from the city to the tiny village where he was born to help his mother with the funeral arrangements. However, his father, who was the village school teacher for 40 years, died in a distant city and is still there. The main obstacle the son encounters is his mother's determination that his father be treated in keeping with tradition: that he be carried, on foot, from the distant city back to the village so he won't forget his way home. While attempting to arrange that for her, the son remembers his father and mother's famous courtship, which is shown in splendid color flashback. (The film is bookended in black-and-white sequences which recount the present.) In that flashback is what must be the most endearing love story ever committed to film -- in part because so simple, so "ordinary," and so innocent. Anyone who knows this film knows why one would want to have a copy of it in one's library: it is a film to be cherished.Read full review
