I bought this on the advice of a friend and boy am I sorry I wasted my money! I did not get to see the original Producers--I hope it was funnier than this! "The Producers" is, at best, moderately amusing--not even close to being laugh out loud funny. The songs are predictable and not even remotely catchy (the best being "If You've Got It Flaunt It" and "Haben Sie Gehoren Die Deutsche Band"), the lyrics forgettable. Nathan Lane is quite good as an aging Romeo for the geriatric set, his best moments being his delight over Uma Thurman (amusing in itself for a gay-not-even-trying-to-pass-for-straight actor). Matthew Broderick has the makings of a good (not great) song and dance man, given better material, but is less than his adorable self with a puffy, doughy face. A weight loss regime or plastic surgery is desperately needed! The two bright spots in the film are Will Ferrel and Uma Thurman. The former steals every scene he is in, chewing the scenery with wild Nazi abandon. The latter is scruptious and sexy with a more-than-passable singing voice, and with those curves, who cares whether she can really dance (clearly not Lane's character!)? The idea is good and might have come off better in the original but is poorly executed here. My advice: get Robin Hood-Men In Tights-it's far funnier and the songs are better!Read full review
I loved the original Producers (with Gene Wilder) but this remake is my daughter's favorite of the two. I can't blame her. While I still love the original, the remake is just so much more than the original. The color is, of course, better. The music is a combo of the original and some new stuff that is very catchy. Broderick and Lane are exquisite as Bloom and Bialystock (although when I'm not looking at the screen I see Simba and Timon in my mind's eye). The Oola character has been expanded which was surprisingly good for the story. In most scenes either the original movie has been stuck to or it's been tweaked for the better. I don't generally like Will Ferrel but he did an excellent job portraying the Hitler-loving play writer. In fact about the only thing I wasn't delighted with in this film was the way the lead role of Hitler was rewritten. The original film had a hippie playing Hitler and it was absolutely hysterical in the sequence where we see the finished play. In this remake the character playing Hitler was campy-funny but the change in the role lacked the side-busting hilarity the hippie character had. Apart from that, though, this is probably the best remake of a movie I have ever seen. After a few more views it may actually surpass the original in my heart.Read full review
If you like Mel Brooks you will love this movie! It is the story of two men who figure out they can make more money from a flop on Broadway than from a hit. So they get the worst play (Springtime for Hitler), the worst director, (a man who first appears in a ball gown), and the worst actors. Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane, who opened the show on Broadway are hilarious as is Will Ferrell as the Nazi playwrite. Uma Thurman is adequate as the beautiful Swedish secretary, a bit old for the part in my opinion, but she can sing and dance. Mel Brooks manages to offend just about everyone and the jokes and the laughs just keep coming
After catching the "The Producers" on stage, I knew I must see the movie version of it. I rented and love it. It is hilarious, witty, and has catchy sing along musical numbers. I now own this movie. The play was originally written by Gene Wilder and done as a non-musical movie starring Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel back in the 1960s. I did not find this version as funny, especially after seeing the musical version. Both the non-musical and muscical version were produced by Mel Brooks, famous for his crazy hilarious movies such as "Young Frankenstein" and "Blazing Saddles". Get the tissue box out as you will be laughing hysterically with tears rolling down your face at the crazy antics of all these actors: Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Uma Thurman and Will Ferrell are great in this movie version of this Broadway musical.Read full review
