How confident was DreamWorks about the success of their animated Bible epic The Prince of Egypt? So confident that they decided to simultaneously release three soundtracks for the film, each targeted at a different audience. It was an audacious move, since there were few songs in the film -- which means that not only did "the official soundtrack" feature only a handful of tunes from the movie, but there were two companion records that had nothing to do whatsoever with the actual picture, other than existing as tributes. Ironically, those two records turned out to be better and more focused than the original soundtrack. The Prince of Egypt [Original Soundtrack] combines elements of the score with songs from the film, adding a few tracks by contemporary superstars (Boyz II Men's "I Will Get There," K-Ci & Jo-Jo's "Through Heaven's Eyes," Mariah Carey & Whitney Houston's unexpected -- and unexpectedly dull -- duet "When You Believe") for good measure. If that sounds similar to Disney's approach to soundtracks in the '90s, it's because the men behind the album -- Stephen Schwartz and Hans Zimmer -- worked on Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and The Lion King. Schwartz and Zimmer try valiantly to write ambitious songs that remain accessible, but they don't always reach their goal. Part of the problem is that the subject itself is difficult to tackle, since the life of Moses doesn't really lend itself to this style. More often than not, they succeed, but the results are often easier to admire than love, especially since the big names are considerably less successful in their efforts than the singers from the movie. In addition to that problem, the score sometimes feels out of place on the record -- even though it's written by Schwartz and Zimmer, it doesn't fit with the emotional tenor or flow of the album. There are enough strong moments to make The Prince of Egypt a good listen, but it simply isn't as rewarding as its two cousins.Read full review
I searched for three years to obtain this sound track. The music is of the highest quality. This is my duaghters favorite movie and sound track. She has performed several of these peices for vocal concerts. The words are included in the cover sleeve. The recording quality is excellant, of course. If you love the animated movie, this takes it from the screen directly to your car, Ipod,MP3,etc. and puts it there in full high quality sound to enjoy any where. A must buy for anyone!! A+++
A good way to measure a movie soundtrack is to see if it can survive without the movie. Too many movie soundtracks that sound good during the movie fall short when listened to on its own. This, however, is not the case for The Prince of Egypt soundtrack. The composer perfectly blends Middle Eastern hints into the traditional classical orchestra, making the listener feel in a different land. The four actors of the film who sang their own parts don't disappoint and the cover singers for the rest of the cast sound convincing. Of course, this album is worth the price just for having Ofra Haza's beautifully haunting voice. It is easy to get the feel of the film when listening to the soundtrack, especially during the instrumental pieces. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who is even remotely into instrumental music or to anyone who is a fan of music scores from movies. It's a MUST to have in your collection.Read full review
The music is wonderful, the voices of the singers are incredible. I bought the video several years ago, and fell in love with the entire movie. When I learned that there was a movie soundtrack, I began my search. After two years of checking web sites, I finally found it on an Ebay auction. I have listened to this CD almost exclusively since it arrived. The music takes me back in history to the times and hardships of Moses. I've felt inspiration from the lyrics and the beautiful voices of the performers. Wonderful!
The movie gave an angle on the Biblical story that was very powerful. Yet, the music back drop was just as powerful. The first time I saw this movie was at the time my daughter was in a serious fight for her 2-month on life. Ten years later, it is still the favorite of my family & this CD is my 3rd from consistent use. The message from both movie and CD are a master piece for generations to come!!!
