I bought this book under the presumption that it was a political satire. Little could I have imagined how interesting, stirring, and even disturbing so many of our social assumptions are in fact fallacious. Beliefs stretched like a trampoline between media coverage and our reputed scientific masters of knowledge, can leave readers and listeners bouncing around on what turn out to be very flimsy springs. The items covered are heavily documented, but I found the reading style a bit challenging; prepare for a meal with some complex carbohydrates, rather than a Reader's Digest beverage. Guaranteed to raise your interest, raise your eyebrows, and smirk at media coverage of the items covered in this book.
If you're like me you get tired of all the political correctness that is in our society. I'm not talking about real tolerance and being kind and having real compassion. I am talking about the wearing of personal feelings on our sleeves, not being open to healthy discussion of different points of views and interpretation of facts and the trying of a small, mostly academic/political group of people who are supposedly "politically correct" in their thinking to impose their somewhat "different" thinking and definitions on the rest of us without our consent and without open discussion. I like these series of books and authors for their candor, their researched facts and their willingness to "tell it like it is". If you are infected with PC itis you will not like these books because they will challenge you to actually "THINK" for yourself instead of just going with the emotional sound bites of the PC people. Note I am not saying it will change your mind I am simply saying it will make you think! Hard! And better yet maybe it will make you research it for yourself to see if some of the "truth" you hear from the mainstream media and academic/political leaders is really the "truth"! Enjoy them if for nothing else than to get the "little gray matters" excited.Read full review
This book was better than I'd hoped possible. The author tackles a herd of sacred cows, and with references to back him up, he shows that most of what Amerca "knows" about controversial topics, and most of what is taught in secular colleges and universities, is gloriously wrong. He even proposes some reasons why bogus science thrives: science can be prostituted for money, for ideological advantage, or by the sheer inertia of a bad idea entrenched in academia. Perhaps Tom Bethel would like to take on the Social Sciences next?
I like the straight forward presentation. I like the format and content organization. I heard several opinions from others concerning the balance to the left/liberal media and thought it best to see for myself. Great choice!
