There are stunning revelations about North Korea on almost every page, described in a matter of fact way, for example, the prohibition from staring at the night sky, a rather simple rule that helps one appreciate freedoms usually taken for granted. The writing is descriptive yet crisp. The author has honed his craft and really delivered.

This is my new favorite book. It’s in 2 parts. The first part of course is the introduction of the hard life the main character grows up in. You follow his life in North Korea to a point. Part 2 is still amazingly interesting and harrowing but opens up a whole new redeeming dysfunction. All I can say is just read it. It needs to be a movie. It’s that good.

Got the package in great shape and I'm only about a sixth of the way through the book, but I would strongly suggest reading it. Mature readers content.

5 star rating is based on style and content. If you're squeamish, it is a bit of a difficult read. I felt like I was at a private window, looking into N Korea, seeing things that Western journalists would never have the ability to report. From today's headlines... if they could be written about this area.
A novel that explores the psychology of “citizens” of a thoroughly repressive police state, yet fails to fully breathe life into its characters.
