I have to say right off, I didn't care for this all that much. The film wasn't very scary at all, although they attempted to throw in the quick subliminal-like scenes of people in masks and blood that are so common with modern horror. Boring. The film centers around Robert Thorn (Liev Schreiber) and his wife (Julis Stiles) and "their" child Damien, who is actually the son of satan. This is (of course) a remake of the original, and remakes seem to turn out worse more than not. Liev Schreiber should never have been cast in this role. His lack of feeling and attitude toward his movie roles always turns me off. Not even so much as a facial expression change. The same also goes for the child. No feeling into the part, and hardly three lines the entire movie! So we get a few "evil" stares, big deal! I found the story line to be at best choppy. After the first twenty minutes of the movie jumps through a period of five years, from there it is tough to stay focused on what is going on, and I could have used some more backstory. In short, horror films are just not what they used to be. Give me low-budget, comical, seventies style films any day of the week, and leave tired, re-made story lines and poor acting on the editing room floor. Skip this one. Since Hollywood has run out of good ideas we must suffer remakes of all sorts. This one may be better than its original but that's not saying much at all. The boy who plays Damien is creepy and there are a few shocking deaths throughout the story. But the pace is much too slow to keep anyone who saw the same theatrical trailer advertising a fast pace thriller interested for the whole movie. There is an all-star cast and the story has some fun twists and turns but the acting feels forced except for action sequences. Check this out if you are a fan of the original or just have to see every horror movie ever created. Anyone else can pass this one up and rest easy by doing it. 3/5
I enjoyed this movie for the most part. I have not seen the original version of this film, so I can't comment on what the differences were. I was the most impressed by Julia Stiles and David Thewlis' acting. I didn't care much for Liev Schrieber or Damian (the son of Satan). Liev didn't put much emotion into his acting, I definitely think they should have cast someone else in his place. As for Damaian, I didn't like him because he barely talked at all, he was conveyed more as a mute child than anything else. The deaths in this movie are very real and violent. This movie is not for the faint-hearted. I recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys a good horror styled movie.
I bought this movie for two reasons. First and foremost, it was cheap! You can't beat the price of .99 cents. The second reason was couriousity. I grew up watching the OMEN movies, but as it usually turns out with remakes, there were no surprises. I will give the movie makers credit on one count though. They made a great choice on picking the little boy to play the part of Damien. He has thatsame look about him that the original child actor had- PURE EVIL in the eyes!
I loved it!
