There may be some nostalgia influencing this review as I was born in 1980 and grew up with a lot of amazing fantasy and sci-fi movies of the 80's that have a special feel to them thanks to (what some would say is limited technology of that time) immense work and creativity that went into practical special effects with props, costumes, puppets/animatronics, etc. These physical sets and props will always, in my opinion, beat out CGI because it simply is not as authentic and believable as something that's really there. Granted, CG special effects have come a long way, but it's still questionable in may uses even now in 2018. Also, there are few and far between new or original stories, such as this, without it being a sequel, prequel or remake/reboot. Neverending Story is one of those magical movies that was based on a book of the same title, containing a real-world average boy getting bullied in what appears to be New York, who enjoys reading, using his imagination to escape reality, and is largely day-dreaming because he recently lost his mother. When this young boy, our main character, Bastian, enters a bookstore after fleeing from some bullies in school, he comes across a stranger bookkeeper who is reading a mysterious book. The bookkeeper tells Bastian that the book isn't for him because of what's inside, but Bastian's curiosity leads to him 'borrowing' it and ditching school to see what the hub bub is all about within the pages of this ominous book. Once Bastian begins reading, he discovers that things aren't exactly what they seem, and his reality, as well as the book's fantasy realm may be more connected than he could ever imagine. I won't go into detail about the story, other than it contains a lot of memorable characters, some comedy, some adventure, some drama (that horse scene!), and some scares that will be entertaining for the whole family. Don't expect any amazing features on this bare bones DVD though; it has nothing but some text info on the movie- not even a documentary or featurette: just some bullet points with facts/trivia. I know there's a blu ray 30th anniversary edition out now that is sure to be full of the behind the scenes stuff you're looking for if that interests you.Read full review

I admit, I am one to wax nostalgic on movies from my childhood, but this particular film is one of epic story and immense imagintion. I first saw it in 87 and have been a fan since. This is what stories are supposed to feel like. Moving and emotional, action packed and suspenseful. Characters that you not only relate to but you can feel their struggle. Good for all ages and a truly timeless masterpiece.

My 6 year old grandsons, watched 3 times, they really liked it. They only get so a limited amount of time watching TV so I was glad it was something they enjoyed. Now looking for Treasure Island.
