Anybody interested in this subject will know the history and find little surprising in this account, but the personal impact of triumphs and reverses is well evoked. Moral judgement of the protagonist is negated by the compelling internal logic of the young man involved in warfare; Werner's concerns are divorced from high politics, caught up in a shattering cycle of grim, terrifying combat and hedonistic furlough. There is an extent to which the story telling suffers from a somewhat clunky prose style, but this is a quibble really, and may originate in the translation. Well worth the time.
