These Moody Blues SACD's were transferred from the Quad mixes done in the 70's. They are NOT 5.1 - The center channel speaker has no signal, even though they call it 5.1 and the center channel speaker light comes on, the center speaker is silent. However, the original quad mixes by Derek Varnals were excellent with great use of the surrounds as a source of backup vocals, acoustic guitar, split double lead guitars, mellotron and even lead vocal on occasion. It is unfortunate that Lodge's bass was recorded so badly and these mixes cannot correct that, but with a bit of tweaking, you can make the bass legible. You really need to get these if you're a Moodies fan.
I was absolutely devastated after hearing the mixing on this sacd of one of my favorite albums. There were so many instrument sounds missing or sadly overblown on this issue. I bragged to my wife and made her sit down to listen. About halfway through, both of us looked at each other and said no way. Before u voice concern, let me tell u that i was listening thru a Shanling audiophile sacd player, a Marantz 300DC Amp, a Marantz 3800 Preamp, and PSB Stratus Gold i speakers. Other sacd’s sing like magic in this system. The mfsl version of TOCCC sounds great. I’ll stick to it from now on!

I suppose everyone hears things differently, but I don't understand why some don't like these Moody Blues SACDs. The "core 7" Deram SACD releases are very, very GOOD and have astounding clarity. Perhaps a very bright system might exaggerate the table but on properly matched gear, I enjoy the SACD set more than any other digital recordings. Even the original vinyl LP (or any vinyl for that matter) loses information as the record ages; so even if you like vinyl better (for whatever reason) I stick with SACD for lasting sound quality. If I had to choose one format for The Moody Blues to keep for posterity, it would be the 2006-7 Deram (gold) SACDs.
