We have only been doing crosswords recently, so we needed some help getting started. So I purchased the simon & schuster crossword dictionary. Boy were we disappointed! Could hardly ever find anything in it. It did have a good appendix with nobel lauriates and other specific stuff that was useful, but generally it was a dud. So next we bought the NY Times Crossword Dictionary, and, even though it was massive, it had no names, and was hardly any better than the Simon & Schuster. Then we found the Million Word Crossword Dictionary, and it is certainly miles ahead of the other two. We were so pleased to finally have a reference that was often helpful. Any crossword doer would appreciate having this book!
Since I am a novice to both e-bay and crossword puzzles, I have found this book to be all that I asked for and more. The print is smaller than in some dictionaries that I have seen, but I think that is to give more entries. This book is as good for someone new, like me, as well as to those people, who do the New York Times Sunday crossword in ink! This book also seems to have all the most up to date as well as old - movies, TV, radio, etc. programs and their characters names and even who played them. I am very pleased with the book and even glad that it is paperback instead of hardcover. Hardcover would have been too hard to handle.
Its 5 star rating is warranted, it is easy to use, you don't need to search and cross reference to find the category you need. I bought it for a honest lady who insists on trying to do the N.Y.T. crossword without using the answer key for help!!! She says it is very helpful and thorough. However,we wish they could figure out a way to enlarge the print!
My old crossword dictionary was worn out and falling apart in my hands, so I went looking for a new one. This book looked exactly like what I had in mind. It is perfect in almost every way. It gives answers to just about any crossword clue out there. The only downside is the size of the book. I was expecting a small paperback the same size of my old one, but it is a full size paperback book. Other than the size, I love it.
I bought this as a birthday gift for a very dear friend. Her and I both enjoy crossword puzzles and at times are stumped on the same word. We often call each other on Sunday evenings and try to compare solutions from our local paper puzzle. Years ago I bought her one but it is far outdated. We need new information to bring us up with the times! We learn new words all the time----see you can teach an old dog new tricks!
