There were two significant facts that Knightly got wrong. Perhaps its because he only spent 5 days with Philby in Russia? I subscribe to 'Goodreads' and post my views there because I am a published author. Donald MacLean is also a very distant relative. I never knew him or even heard of him while he was alive. Overall Philby is a bit of a sleezebag but sleezebags sell books! Also, I do recommend this book along with all of the other books that are part of this story, Brits who attended Cambridge University and became double agents for Russia. I don't approve of what they did with the exception of the three key players who handed Stalin the formula for the A-bomb because it has kept the good 'ole USofA from dropping any more A-bombs and I recommend the purchase of all of the books related to this story from Ebay because Ebay has the best prices. For anyone who enjoys non-fiction life involving reading about war, spies, intrigue, bombs, etc., this is a good book and I do recommend it. I was a bit worried about the condition of the book because the price was so low and I was surprised that it was in particularly excellent condition! Thank you.Read full review

If you know history, and you are a follower of John Le Carre's novels, then you will enjoy this book. Knightley PRESUMES that you know some history, especially some history about the Spanish Civil War, 1936, and World War II. Knightley also presumes that you know something about the growth of the federal government, and the roots of the CIA (OSS). This book will "tie together some loose ends." There is no question about where Le Carre got some of his inspiration for some parts of "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy." I strongly recommend this book.
