About this product

Product Information

Hard-drinking private eye Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) sleuths the backyard of San Francisco in search of an elusive black bird statuette while evading the setups of three disparate miscreants: the duplicitous Brigid, the perfumed Mr. Cairo, and the scheming Fat Man. John Huston's brilliant directorial debut is aided by first-rate performances, excellent camera work, as well as the director's acute attention to detail while shooting the film. Based on the crime novel by Dashiell Hammett. Academy Award Nominations: 3, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Sydney Greenstreet), and Best Screenplay. Previous versions of the story were filmed in 1931 (a.k.a. DANGEROUS FEMALE) and in 1936 (as SATAN MET A LADY, starring Bette Davis), and poorly redone in 1975 (THE BLACK BIRD).

Very happy with this transaction, item was just as described, well packaged, and arrived on time. I can't rate seller communication since there was no need for us to, nor did we communicate.

The Testor's #505, Douglas C-54 "Skymaster," wood model airplane kit is nicer than originally described by seller (someone did a pretty good job of partially assembling it back in the day). Pretty nice original box too. Model was well packaged for delivery and arrived way sooner than scheduled by the USPS. Highly respected and recommended seller of vintage, mid-late 1940s era, Testor's wood models!

I purchased two violins from Merchvent that were well-packed and arrived in the condition described (I restore violins and this rarely happens). As an added bonus, Merchvent refunded me more than I expected for the combined shipping. I will gladly buy from this seller again. AAA+++

Out of nowhere, my 30 year old son called and said he heard a discussion of the film on talk radio. This was a good opportunity to expose him to some of the best film noir ever recorded on cellulose. I had seen it several times and I must admit it took more than one viewing to grasp the film. But, who cares. One has the chance to watch masters such as Bogart, Mary Astor (huge in silent films) and Sydney Greenstreet. And with John Huston's direction, how can you ever be bored? It is a comlex murder mystery with just the right ratio of "tough guy" humor, suspense and has a host of suspects. Who dunnit? It's based on a Dashiell Hammett (The Thin Man) novel and set the stage for Bogart's screen personna and career. Whether he was Sam Spade as in the "Maltese Falcon" or Phillip Marlow as in ...
