The Long Gray Line by Rick Atkinson is an outstanding in-depth look at the West Point class that suffered the heaviest losses of any USMA class during the Vietnam War. I read this book when it was first released back in 1989 and decided that I'd like to have a copy in my military history library. Some years ago I found a copy of the 1966 USMA Howitzer (West Point's yearbook) and I think that Atkinson's book and the '66 Howitzer in combination provide a very human face to a heroic group of young men who were immersed in the crucible of Vietnam.

Very interesting book--and well written; the author tells the story of several selected members from the class of 1966, their journey from their very first day at West Point in 1962; all the way through their years there. As this time frame was during the Vietnam War, the book shows the tragedy endured by these men and their families. It also covers the period after the war, the disillusionment felt; and how these men changed over the course of the 25 years the book spans. Anyone who is interested in American history, the Vietnam War, or West Point, etc. will benefit reading this book; and will remember it always. Nicely illustrated with photos.
This is an excellent historical account of West Point graduates, Meticulously researched by the author."The Long Gray Line" was very educational as well as enjoyable.,

Author has a very smooth, easy reading narrative style that keeps the story moving and is never dull. A great look "inside" West Point of the 1960's. Definitely recommend!
