How can I describe the Redwall series by Brian Jacques with any other word except EXCELLENT! With adventure, suspense, villans and heroes, you can't ask for a better combination to grab hold of the imagination of children- especially boys. My three boys (ages 6, 9 & 11) are each reading a different book in the series and we are listening to one on CD in the van. But don't fret girls, you will probably like them too! My 5 year old daughter listens intently to hear what is going to happen next! There is nothing alluring in the bad guys and there is nothing questionable in the good guys. There is no shade of grey between good and evil-I don't have to worry about my children walking away from these books thinking it might be kinda fun to be one of the bad guys! They want to be the hero-the warrior who stands for the right and protects peace (and fantastic sounding food!). In fact, my only concern is that they actually walk away from the books--once in awhile anyway. When they do, it is often to don cloaks and swords and to go find an adventure of their own! Thank you, Brian Jacques, for a series of books that "calls" to my children to read more!Read full review
These books are great for family read aloud, tweens, teens and even adults who love action/adventure fiction. All three of our kids love this author and my husband and I read them too. Brian Jacques will be missed. We are so fortunate to have his creative mind available in the stories he left.

This book was the first I read of the Redwall series. It is an exemplary book showing off Jacques's mastery of storytelling. The book draws you in and never lets you go with the racing adventure, the maddening death and destruction, and ultimately peace. I would recommend this series to anyone and i would especially recommend this volume in the Redwall history.
