In the end, I'm glad that I read this book but it took almost 100 pages to get into it. My book club chose to read this book under my suggestion. I had not read any of the traveling pants books but heard that they were good so when I found out that Anne Brashares was writing something that was more age appropriate, I wanted to bring it as one of my selections for book club. It was nearly unanimous that we read this book. I was a little disappointed that it took me so long to get "into" it but once I did, it turned out to be a pretty good book. I host book club here next week and I am looking forward to the many topics that can be discussed from this read. If you want to you can look deep into many things or just skim the surface and still have interesting things to discuss. I would recommend the book to read but be prepared for a slow start.Read full review
I really liked this author so I thought that I would read this book. I was definitely not disappointed when I started to read this book. It is about two sisters and a boy that grows up next to them. The book starts out with them being children and ends when they are in their late 20s, early 30's. The oldest sister gets sick, and the younger one somehow blames herself because she was with the boy when it happens. She doesn't talk to the boy after that. Both the girl and the boy are too stubborn to talk about what happened. The book is so wonderfully written, you will not be able to put it down until it is finished. I definitely recommend this book for people who like stories that follow the lives of the characters. You really get a feel for the characters as you read about them growing up and growing together.Read full review
It looks, at a quick glance, to be an interesting read, a story which encompasses a lot of emotions. There seem to have been "growing up" years, which two sisters spent in their parents' beach house on an island near the larger house of a dear friend, then separation from the friend and their eventual reunion. Their lives are changed when one of the sisters develops an illness from which she does not recover and the surviving sister and her parents are left to cope with the loss. I think it is a good book but one which is difficult to describe just by glancing briefly through.
I purchased this book because my daughter read the "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" by the same author and really enjoyed it. This book, The Last Summer is Anne Brashare's first "adult" novel; but it does seem like it was still written for a younger audience (20ish). However, it is an excellent book and a great summer read.
This book was really good. I love the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants books, and I was kind of scared to read another book by her not about the girls. But, needless to say, I was NOT disappointed with this one. It'a a really fast read.
