When I got my first computer, it was a tool to do a job and replaced both the typewriter and filecared. Now computers do a whole lot more than that. At age 60, I find this machine to be my window on the world. But my mother is 88. She BOUGHT a computer -- two, in fact -- but has no idea of how to use them to get online. I've tried to explain until my green eyes turned blue .. but she just doesn't GET it when I explain. So I bought this book for her. The way this book is laid out, ANYBODY can learn how to do the basic simple stuff that most of us who are computer-literate do aotumatically, without thinking about it. But for a newbie .. it's confusing and a lot to learn at the very beginning. Mother and I are not geographically close enough for frequent visits, but this book will help her immensely. The print is nice and big and easy on the eyes, the layout is more or less logical and there are hundreds of entries in the index .. so that just about any newbie question can find an answer. I think this is a GREAT book for an older person just starting their online journey. It's high on my personal recommendation list. However . I would NOT advise installing that disk until AFTER you've worked through the book and see what programs you have already on your machine. The disk seems to be starter versions of several larger programs that are available for sale. Most machines already have some form of word processing program. some form of graphics or photo program, etc. Put the disk away for later and just work with the book for now.Read full review
