I read the book, because I finally went out to buy it at retail after it never arrived via Half-com's ANYBOOK vendor. The book was excellent, though somewhat flawed. Desai (this daughter of Anita Desai) is a very promising author nonetheless. But dealing with Half.com and its vendors has been a disaster: I am having a very difficult time getting a credit from them. We're talking about an $11.88 purchase, and they don't seem to want to acknowledge that (now six weeks out) it still will not arrive! Many emails exchanged over this, and still no credit.
After reading this book I felt as if I should get out more. It seems that in everyday life we really don't see what is going on in the grand scheme of things in the world. This book left me moved in a way that no other book has. I felt the pain of each indiviual in this story, leaving me in shock at the end of the novel. I feel every learned individual should do themselves a favor and read this treasure of a story. This book changed the way I view world events and the people that i will never come in contact with.
I read this book for one of my college Literature classes. The book is an excellent example of real life in India through the 1960s. The book gives real life details about how life perspired in India, how Western culture affected the social classes of India. The book however, has difficulty keeping the readers attention at times, and sometimes explains beyond the story and loses sight of the plot.
The book is difficult to read, it is about the Indian culture with many nuiances that I did not understand. It is also a very gloomy story overall.
