First time I read this book was at the time of its original release. Unfortunately in one of many moves it was lost. Finding it again was a stroke of luck as it is one of the most hilarious looks at the medical profession in a large city hospital ER. It's a lighter side view of the hurdles in dealing with the elderly whose minds have; for the great part, "checked out" leaving their bodies behind for someone else to deal with. The movie that was made under the same name just didn't do the book justice and couldn't deliver the true essence of the story. Going through the crash course of residency in the chaotic environment that can be found in hospitals in many major cities can be overwhelming. Add to that the special needs of the old and infirm then throw in the wacky execcentricities of a few key hospital staff and you have a recipe for chaos on a hilarious scale. Interject a nice steamy budding romance to top it all off and you have the formula for what makes this such a great read.Read full review

Read this as an intern + enjoyed it. Loaned out + never returned (like a lot of my medical texts)... Now after 30 yrs of practice, time to re-read it! Recommended.

Great book. I enjoy reading it during my internship. Humorous. Easy to relate to years after its production. The book is a must read especially it came highly recommended from a respectable cardiologist.
