This story is about 2 sisters who are, quite unexpectedly, left penniless after their father dies in the 1920's. It tracks all the ups and downs they encounter while trying to make a living for themselves during a time when women were living under many constraints, although times were beginning to change. This is a mini soap opera as far as I am concerned. However, it is wonderful if you want period reference about the clothing worn during this era as the sisters eventually fall back on their one talent: designing clothes.
I love this series. It is right after the turn of the century when the world was going throughso many changes. Through the lives of these two sisters we can see what life was like for women of the era. THe costumes and sets are extrordinary! I watched this when the series was on PBS and missed several episodes. So happy to see it again after all these years.
This was the first set in a series on the House of Eliott, a firm created by sisters in England at the turn-of-the 20th century. The design and fabric of the clothes of a bygone era are a delight to see. It made a great 75th birthday gift to a friend who is a lifelong student of clothing and rich fabrics.
Outstanding BBC series complete with 1920's period clothes & cars with fast moving suspense and mystery. One of the best since "Upstairs, Downstairs" from BBC.
I have always liked this series and am replacing my VHS copies with DVD. This series is stylish and interesting and highly recommemded.
