Based on the Pulitzer-prize winning novel by Michael Cunningham, THE HOURS employs Virginia Woolf's classic novel and central character, MRS. DALLOWAY, as its foundation and inspiration. Spanning three different eras, during one day, the film focuses on the parallel lives of three women joined in their depression, alienation, and search for love. Nicole Kidman, wearing a prosthetic nose, is virtually unrecognizable as the tortured writer Virginia Woolf whose ongoing battle with mental illness eventually led to her tragic suicide in 1941. The film begins with the moment of her suicide and flashes back on her life and work as she crafted her most memorable character, Clarissa Dalloway, in 1923. In 1950's California suburbia another woman, Laura Brown (Julianne Moore), struggles with alienation and depression. Trapped by her clinging young son and an adoring husband whom she does not love, the desperate woman tries to prepare for her husband's birthday but cannot stop reading MRS. DALLOWAY. Finally, in modern day Manhattan, Clarissa Vaughn (Meryl Streep), a lesbian who lives with her lover (Allison Janney) and her daughter (Claire Danes), struggles to prepare a party for her ex-husband (Ed Harris) who is dying of AIDS. Director Stephen Daltry uses beautiful overlapping editing to sew the women's interwoven stories seamlessly together. At the core of this profoundly moving film is the trio of award-winning actresses who grace the screen with their bold and awe-inspiring performances.

Poignantly beautiful!
This is a great film. Anyone who thinks it is "possibly the worst film ever made" must have only seen 2 movies in their lifetime, or, more likely, have an IQ in the "mentally challenged" range. If I were to receive this as a gag gift, I would be quite happy (especially considering the alternatives from someone with such poor taste -- what are their normal gifts, whoopee cushions?). And a warning that it might make you depressed? That one gave me a good laugh. If you're that easily swayed by external stimuli, then maybe you should research movies before you watch them. This is among my favorite 50 movies of all time, and I've seen a lot of movies, mostly critically acclaimed award winners like this one. This film definitely was deserving of its nine ... If someone (well probably only a woman would relate) has EVER been depressed or inclined to suicide - they SHOULD NOT WATCH this movie!!!!! It was clever that it threaded three different times and connected three un-connected women -but that is where my praise ends!!! It was so depressing that I re-contemplated suicide (which I hadn't for quite some time. I bought it because I remember it winning all sorts of awards and didn't at all remember the plot -but also loved the ALL STAR cast! I threw it away so no one else wuld have to be subjected to such a depressing movie!If someone (well probably only a woman would relate) has EVER been depressed or inclined to suicide - they SHOULD NOT WATCH this movie!!!!! Quite Possibly the Worst Film Ever Made!
This film basically is about 3 boring suicidal lesbians from three different generations with inter-connected lives. Each has their own minor problems which make them whiny and discouraged. The backgrounds in this film are hideous, as they use bland and dreary backdrops for every scene; thus adding to the misery of having to watch to the viewer. My family treats this movie as a gag gift, as we've never opened the wrapping off the bought tape. We rented this movie once and that was enough for us to learn our lesson. We now sneakily give this movie as a gag once a year at Christmas. Who ever receives it is generally humorously unhappy. We loath this movie with fiery passions!
